Rowing, Explained

Never rowed before? You’re in exactly the right place. Here are the questions we hear most.

Getting Started

What is rowing?

Rowing (also called crew) is a full-body sport where a team moves a long, narrow boat (called a shell) across the water using oars, all in sync. It’s low-impact, builds strength and endurance, and when a crew finds its rhythm, the boat feels like it’s flying. You can row in a big team boat of eight, or in smaller boats all the way down to a single.

What makes rowing a team sport?

To row a four, you need four people, everyone moving as one. At every level, rowers learn to rely on each other fast, and that trust is a big part of what makes rowing special. It’s one of the best ways we know to meet people, build friendships, and become someone your crew can count on.

Do I need any experience?

None at all. Our Learn to Row program is built for complete beginners. Most people who show up have never touched an oar. Our coaches walk you through everything from the ground up.

Juniors or Masters: which one am I?

Juniors is for ages 12–18 (middle and high schoolers). Masters is our program for adults 18 and up. Both welcome beginners, so just pick the one that matches your age and reach out.

Looking for adaptive rowing?

We don’t currently run an adaptive rowing program ourselves, but there’s a great group in Louisville that does. Visit lar-ky.org to learn more.

How do I join?

Start with Learn to Row: pick a session and sign up, and we’ll be in touch with next steps and what to expect. From there, you can keep rowing with our Juniors or Masters programs.

On the Water

Where do we row?

We row on the Ohio River, launching from the Louisville Community Boathouse at 1325 River Road, Louisville, KY 40206, in Waterfront Park, by the yellow parking lot on River Road. It’s a beautiful stretch of water and an easy spot to find.

When do we normally row?

It depends on the program. Adult Learn to Row meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 6–8pm. Ongoing Masters rowers train from late spring into the fall, with early-morning, evening, and weekend options. Juniors practice by season (spring, summer, fall, and winter), with days and times set by the coaches before each season starts.

Will I fall in?

Almost certainly not. The team boats beginners start in are wide and stable, you’re rowing with a whole crew, and a coach is always nearby. Tipping over is rare, and we set you up for success before you ever leave the dock.

…but what if I do fall in?

You’ll be just fine. Safety is our first priority: coaches are on the water with you, you’re never far from the dock or a safety launch, and we’ll have already shown you what to do. It makes for a good story, too.

Do I need to know how to swim?

We don’t have a formal swim test or official policy, but you should be comfortable in and around the water. For our junior rowers especially, we ask that they know how to swim. Safety is part of everything we teach, and coaches are right alongside you on the water.

What should I wear?

Snug athletic clothes work best. Loose shorts can catch on the sliding seat. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and shoes you don’t mind getting a little wet at the dock. We provide the boats and oars; you just bring yourself.

How fit do I need to be?

You don’t need to be an athlete to start. Rowing meets you where you are and gets you fitter quickly. It’s one of the best full-body workouts there is, and you set your own pace as you learn.

About the Club

What’s the time commitment?

It’s flexible. Our junior Learn to Row camps run a single week, 9–11am. Adult Learn to Row meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6–8pm over about four weeks. After that, Juniors practice by season (spring, summer, fall, and winter) and Masters row from late spring into the fall, with early-morning, evening, and weekend options to fit around school or work.

Is it expensive?

We’re a volunteer-run nonprofit and we keep rowing as affordable as we can, and all the equipment is provided. To give you a sense: junior Learn to Row camps are $260 for the week ($160 for additional weeks), and adult Learn to Row is $525, which includes a full year of club membership. Ongoing Masters membership has individual, family, and student options. If a junior rower continues year-round through all four seasons (spring, summer, fall, and winter), annual fees come to around $3,000. See the program pages for current details.

Who runs the club?

Volunteers: rowers, parents, coaches, and supporters who love the sport. Everything we do, from Learn to Row to the Derby City Head Race, is powered by people who give their time to the Louisville rowing community.
